Tips to Create a Great Entryway

Creating a Great Entryway

Your entryway is the first impression people get of your home. Follow these tips to create a great entryway AND make a great first impression.

Create a Great Entryway - Tip #1 - Use interesting lighting!!!

Most foyers or entryways into the home have overhead lighting. Use this opportunity to showcase a beautiful light fixture to help create a great entryway.

  • If you have tall ceilings - use a pendant that drops down and hangs around 8 feet to the bottom of the fixture.

  • If you have a large foyer - go for a large light fixture. Always make sure your scale works with your space. Too small looks out of place, but too large can also look out of place in a small space.

  • Find something that sets the tone for your home. Do you love antiques? Find a vintage light fixture. Going for a modern aesthetic? Choose a sleek contemporary fixture.

  • If you have the wall space or artwork hanging on the wall - this might be a great opportunity to have some wall sconces or art lighting.

  • If you have a table - add a lamp.

  • Beautiful or unique lighting really dress the space up - like adding accessories to a great outfit.

Create a Great Entryway - Tip #2 - Create a Focal Wall

Does your entry have a long blank wall? Use this space to create a focal wall with either a gallery wall (click here for my post on creating a gallery wall) or use some beautiful wallpaper. This also would be a fun place to add wood slats to your space.

Create a Great Entryway - Tip #3 - Go For a Bold Color!

Because foyers are a pathway to somewhere else and usually have a room off of them, and typically have natural light coming in - this can be a great way to add in a darker color! Dark colors are very in right now and can make your space feel more intimate. Even if you don't go with a dark color; you can go with a shade or two deeper than another paint color you have in a connecting room. OR you can have fun with it and choose a pop of a bright color. Tie in the bright color with a piece of artwork, or a pillow on a chair or bench in the entry.

Create a Great Entryway - Tip #4 - Make it Easy on Your Guests

If your space can accommodate it; add a chair or bench. Not only does is look cozy, but it comes in very handy when someone might need to take shoes on or off in your home, or to lay their bag on when coming for a visit. It's a nice hospitable gesture on your part and feels very welcoming.
