Want to set a gorgeous table for Thanksgiving? Follow these tips to create a table that will wow your guests. Setting the table is an art, but can be easily achieved with a few key elements and can make your dining room look amazing.
Setting the Table - Tip 1 - Keep the Center Decor Low
When arranging your centerpiece, it's a great idea to vary the heights, but make sure your taller items aren't too big that you can't see the person across from you. Conversations should be able to flow freely during meal time and having to look around a large floral display can prohibit conversation. So, if you want some height, go for tall thin candle sticks, tall stems that are sparse (sticks, berries, etc.), single flowers, or just go lower with your items. If you have a beautiful taller full display you want to show off - maybe add it to your entry table.
Setting the Table - Tip 2 - Layer Objects
Layering makes everything more interesting and gives that designer look. Start with a table cloth, a runner, a length of fabric, craft paper, placemats, chargers, etc. Your table should have a base to build from. What you choose will come more from what atmosphere/ style you are creating. Rustic or farmhouse? Choose the craft paper or maybe burlap. Traditional and formal? A tablecloth or formal runner will do the trick. Usually these work well in a solid color or non distracting pattern so that your other items stand out. Once you've selected the base, start adding items.
Setting the Table - Tip 3 - Bring in Nature
Here is where you start layering on top of your base. If you are not a nature lover or it doesn't work with your style - skip this step, but I do think nature really adds a lovely earthy element and can range from formal to modern to minimal. If you happen to live in an area that has great fall foliage, then go out and pick some berries, leaves, stems and either add them to vases, jars, or just lay them flat. If you aren't quite as lucky to have nature at your disposal (I sadly am not), then there are loads of great fake options of wreaths (which can be laid flat), garlands or stems.
Adding faux branches or garlands can add texture and nature and be used year after year.
Setting the Table - Tip 4 - Add Candles
Adding candles or string lights really adds beauty to the table. Ambiance, interest, and a warmth. If you are lighting real candles, be careful that there is nothing near by that they can catch on fire, or add them to a hurricane to minimize this risk. Also, if using real candles, the table probably isn't the time to put out your favorite scents. The scents can mingle with the food you're serving and might be unappealing. Go for unscented candles instead, or these fun string lights!
I think these tiny acorn lights are adorable and so fun for Thanksgiving!
Setting the Table - Tip 5 - Use Beautiful Napkins
Beautiful napkins can really create a special feeling. Paper napkins are great and truthfully work better, but who hasn't shown up to a restaurant with cloth napkins and thought "ooo this is fancy!"? Give your guests that experience. You can have paper napkins at the ready in case some guests request them. Look for fun patterns that fit your vibe you are creating.
Setting the Table - Tip 6 - Create Place Decor
Unless you are feeling very formal or trying to keep Aunt Bee away from Grandma Gertrude, you probably don't need place cards; but I do think a little decoration at each table setting is a nice touch. This can be simple like a leaf, or a tiny pumpkin, or can be something more like a take home ornament or little gift. One year my kids drew a picture for every guest for them to take home. It's an unexpected little surprise when your guests sit down to eat.
Setting the Table - Tip 7 - Use Real Silverware
Even if you are going with pretty paper plates, Chinette, or the plastic style of plates, it's a nice idea to use real silverware. Plastic forks and knives often break and feel flimsy. Real silverware sets a much nicer tone for this special dinner. Leave the plasticware for kids parties.
This silverware can work with many styles and are quite elegant with their tapered handles.
Enjoy setting your table and don't be afraid to keep playing with it until you are happy. It doesn't have to be perfect. The memories made around it are what really matters.
