Ok, maybe not "magic", but at least you won't have to do any of the work! Read on to become the Boho master.
What is this style?
Boho style originally stems from Bohemian style. Bohemian style of yesterday is a lot more colorful, layered, has lots of accessories, textures, and a travel flair. Sometimes it might even feel a little eclectic and bold. While this style is still popular today, Bohemian has had an update; enter Boho!
How is Boho Style different?
Boho is kind of like Bohemian's quieter cousin. Boho still uses plants, organic shapes and lines, it's layered, has multiple textures and has an element of fun; but by contrast it's a lot more subdued. The color palette is more muted and earthy. The accessories are more natural. Boho embodies a feeling of calmness and serenity.
Color Palette: beige, tan, cream, sage, clay, gold, red brick, brown, blush
Textures: smooth plaster, beads, nubby linen, woven woods, clay
Accessories: things that are handmade or look handmade, macrame, beaded light fixtures or lamps, baskets, jute, cacti, plants, symbols of the sun, muted rainbows, free form vases
Lines for furniture: organic, curved, soft
How to Put Boho Interior Style Together
Ok, so you've got the general gist of what it should look like and what elements you need, but how do you put it together??
Usually this style starts with a cream or neutral base wall palette (see my blog for best neutrals). If you are craving a bit of color try a sage wall paint. I'd stay away from gold walls. Yellows are very hard to choose and not a great back drop for a room. Use gold/ ochre for accessories like pillows or throw blankets. Blush would make a great paint choice, but be careful of it being too pink. Look for tones with more brown. And remember - ALWAYS take your color sample home and see it in your lighting and space before starting to paint.
Great, now you've got your room painted. This could also be a fun time to add wall textures, of wood slats, wallpaper or plaster (maybe hire a professional for the plaster job). Depending on the room you are tackling take stock of your existing furniture and see if you have anything that might work. Obviously a kitchen or bath wouldn't need furnishings. If you need to shop for new items, look for furniture with natural woods, neutral fabrics, and soft organic lines.
Now for the fun part!!! Accessories!!! Because this style is trendy right now, you should have an easy time finding things at the stores. Target, Homegoods, TJ Maxx, Amazon, Etsy, Natural Life, Pottery Barn, West Elm . . . the list goes on. The good thing about accessories is that they don't have to be expensive. Especially if you are styling a whole room. Mix it up, shop from different stores - you don't want it to look like you picked it all out of a catalog and pushed "order now". It should look textured, storied, and interesting. Annnddd because I'm cool like that; I've included some shoppable links below to get you started! You're welcome ;-)
I Love This but . . .
So, you've gotten this far, you are on board and ready to create your space. Except actually, you're not. This feels cool and all, but also overwhelming. For some people this comes easy and they love doing it themselves. For others; notsomuch. If you are in the latter category and feel like you have the idea, but shopping is not your jam, or maybe you just don't have the time - contact me! I can help you. I can create your space or give you extra guidance through e-design or shop with a designer (if local). Also, this holds true for any style you love. See some of my other blogs for ideas on other styles and how to pull them off.
Whichever way you choose, I hope you found this helpful and are ready to get your home, room, or business styled. Don't keep putting it off. Create the space you love now, so that you can start enjoying it. No time like the present.
