A Home Office Built for Elegance and Function

The Design Intent

The design centered on figuring out a way to accommodate a two person work office and a bed. The desks they had were already large and I didn't want to sacrifice the work space they already had. I knew I wanted to add additional shelving for the many awards she has won in her field. The existing room lacked character of any kind and definitely did not feel like the lovely, fun and bold client I knew. 

I wanted to create a space for her that felt luxurious, refined, and when you sit there every day working - beautiful. 

After much searching I knew what I was looking for did not exist and would need to be custom built. Her side of the office was fairly straightforward with tall bookcases, cabinets for storage, drawers for more storage, and a very large desk space for multiple monitors. It was the daughters side of the room that was a lot more difficult to design. 

I wanted the desks to match for repetition, I wanted a similar elegant feeling, it needed storage, and it needed a bed. In order for all of this to work, the desk would need to disappear for the bed to be able to come out. There was limited space in this room to store the desk, so the desk needed to fold away. So, this design has the legs fold up and the desk fold down. Once the desk is down and secured, the bed could fold out. It also needed to fold out horizontally so that there was still room to walk in the room, work at the other desk and give the longest desk work space.

Because the whole length is occupied by the desk and it would be impossible for drawers to disappear, I created cubbies above the work station and below the doors, so that bins could act as drawers. And then above that are functional storage cabinets. 

We also removed the wire shelves in her closet and added drawers, a hanging space, and shelving for storage and guests. 

Every detail was thought and planned to function for the homeowner, and then figured out how to make it beautiful. We chose to go back to detailed drawer and door faces with lots of molding and trim to make it feel special. A plain shaker door would not have worked for this design.
